The Journey of Backbone
From the red dust of Weipa in Far North Queensland to the green hills of Tasmania, Backbone is a 4,427 km mission to shine a light on the resilience, sacrifice, and mental health challenges of Australia’s regional communities.
We’ll travel through some of the most remote and iconic landscapes in the country, sitting down with the people who feed, fuel, and build the backbone of our nation. These are the farmers, truck drivers, shearers, station hands, store owners, and first responders who are often out of sight and out of mind—but whose stories need to be heard.
Why It Matters
Suicide rates in regional areas are 60% higher than in our capital cities. One farmer dies by suicide every 10 days. Backbone isn’t just a documentary or a photo series—it’s a call to action. Our goal is to raise $500,000 for Farm Angels, providing direct support to those in crisis across rural Australia.
Through powerful imagery, video, and personal storytelling, we’re creating a national conversation that leads to real-world impact.
From Weipa to Tasmania
Over the course of this journey, we’ll document the true face of regional Australia across 4,427 km of dirt roads, small towns, and expansive paddocks. From drought to flood recovery, from isolation to connection, Backbone will chronicle not just hardship—but also hope, strength, and community spirit.
We’ll travel with the tools of our trade—cameras, film gear, and the desire to listen—capturing both intimate portraitsand candid lifestyle moments to tell these stories authentically and respectfully.
